Draw With Sand And Light

We love watching videos of sard art stories on the light table. For this month's art theme in the Light & Reflection series we decided to try sand art with light ourselves!

We began with a pan of sand on the light table. Our preschooler E drew with her fingers first for a sensory pre-writing experience.

Even for adults, creating art with the negative space the light shines through as the sand is pushed away is an acquired skill. As we moved sand we accidentally covered up the art we had previously created. I could see my daughter getting frustrated as she attempted to sprinkle grains of sand on her pictures to add details.

Her sprinkling gave me an idea! I wondered if the sand was fine enough to trickle out of our squeeze bottles.

Oh, it worked beautifully! We could create sand art on the light table in a totally different way with this technique!

As we added details and layered the sand to draw, the air from the bottles would also add a cool effect as it gently blew some sand away (as you can see in the swirl beneath the star below)! At this point my daughter enjoyed watching me draw as she requested subjects for the artwork.
